Aizoaceae (Fig-marigold) |
The Aizoaceae contains 146 genera and ca. 2,300 species. The majority (96%) are endemic to arid or semi-arid parts of Southern Africa, with the greatest diversity in the Cape Floristic Region. Other species occur in Australia, New Zealand, and South America. Most fig-marigolds are herbs, rarely shrubs. Leaves are simple, opposite or alternate, usually succulent. Flowers are singular or in few-flowered cymes. True petals are absent; sepals (5-7) are fused at the base. The fruit resembles the true fig; the seed capsules open only upon arrival of rains.
